Meetings

Flamingo Garden Orchid Society reaches out to our local orchid growers and suppliers to come and speak at our monthly meetings.  In addition, we like to help our members learn by having experienced members talk on common orchid topics and share their growing tips and techniques.  Some of the speakers frequently bring plants for sale and/or raffle at the meeting.  Visit the Newsletter page for more detail on the monthly speaker and activity.

May 13, 2024 – “Culture for Orchids in the Cattleya Alliance” presented by Sandi Block-Brezner. The presentation will focus on good growing habits so you can grow Cattleyas and their relatives to the best of your ability. Much of what will be discussed could apply to most genera grown outside in South Florida. Sandi is a member of FGOS and served on the board for many years. She is also a member of,\ FLOS, an AOS Judge & Secretary with the West Palm Beach Judging Center. A member of AOS and the Royal Horticultural Orchid Society and has received 11 AOS awards, 4 of which are for Cultural Merit and one for Cultural Excellence. Sandi is also a Master Gardener in Broward County and maintains a butterfly garden.

April 8, 2024 – “Bulbophyllums! Among the Best to Grow in Our Area”, Javier Morejon, Hobbyist and President of South Florida Orchid Society.

March 11, 2024 Yolanda Cuesta from Quest Orchids in Miami will present their “No Frills” Repotting Demonstration and Workshop at our meeting on Monday, March 11th. She will also show us how they prepare an orchid for a show. As a professional grower, Yolanda has many years of experience in repotting orchids quickly. So come and see how the pros do this fast and efficiently.

January 8, 2024

Meet Alek Zaslawski from AWZ Orchids in Brazil. He will be presenting “Beautiful Brazilian Habitats” We’ll learn about some Cattleya species with photos of their habitat, photos of flowers and cultivation tips. Including Cattleya granulosa, Cattleya guttata, Laelia praestans and Miltonia spectablebilis. Monday, January 8, 2024, Flamingo Gardens, Mary N. December 11, 2023 – Celebrate the Holidays – No regular meeting this month. Join us in January for our next general meeting. Happy Holidays to all!

November 13, 2023“Specialty Phalaenopsis and Their Culture” presented by Phillip Hamilton.

Come meet Phillip Hamilton from Bredren Orchids located in Apopka, Florida. Phillip was born and raised in Jamaica where he inherited his Dad’s passion for orchids. He has been growing and hybridizing orchids since the age of eight. This is a special treat so be sure to attend this meeting and bring your friends.

October 9, 2023“Growing Miniature Orchids Outdoors in South Florida” presented by Luis M Ortiz Jordan.

Luis has been growing orchids for over 20 years and is particularly passionate about growing miniature orchids. He has multiple AOS awards and in April 2021 published a paper on an orchid he discovered in Puerto Rico, Eurystyles luisortizii. Luis is currently a research scientist at the UF-Scripps Biomedical Research.

September 11, 2023 Nick Ewy, Director of Collections, Naples Botanical Gardens will present “Orchids in the Landscape and Companion Plants” Nick has been a plant grower, collector and gardener since early childhood. He is currently responsible for acquiring, managing, and maintaining a large and diverse collections of subtropical plants from around the world.

August 14, 2023“The Orchids of the Catasetum Alliance and How to Grow Them” presented by Olivier Turina. Olivier fell in love with orchids at the 2013 Ft. Lauderdale Orchid Show and it has become his passion ever since. He is currently on the board of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society and has a YouTube channel called “Orchid House” where he shares a few tips on growing some orchids. 

June 12, 2023“Orchids of Mexico” presented by T. J. Hartung. 

T. J. is a retired computer systems specialist and systems analyst whose love of orchids began while living in California and started growing Cymbidiums. Retiring to Mexico he began rescuing orchids from down trees and broken limbs learning from the great outdoors and researching. He is proud to be on the Board of Directors of Vallarta Botanical Gardens in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

May 8, 2023 – “Water – The Most Important Ingredient” is our program for the evening presented by Judy Bailey. Judy is a retired chemist who has always been obsessed with plants. She is a Florida Master Gardener as well as a Senior Accredited AOS Judge with the West Palm Beach Judging Center. If you have ever attended a presentation by Judy you know you’re in for a treat!

April 10, 2023 – Wondering what’s going on with your orchids?

Join us for a presentation on “Diseases in Orchids: Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention”.

We are excited to have Dr. Romina Gazis, Assistant Professor Plant Pathology – Director, Plant Diagnostic Center, UF/IFAS Tropical Research and Education Center (Trec) for our program this evening. February 13, 2023 Join fellow orchid hobbyists as we learn from Omar Gonzalez our speaker for the evening. Omar is a Chemist by trade and a Botanist at heart. Omar’s program is “Differences in Cattleya Hybrids and How These Differences Can Be Useful in a Home Setting”.  Meet us in the Learning Center at Flamingo Gardens, 3750 S. Flamingo Rd., Davie, FL. November 14, 2022 – “Orchid Environments” presented by Scott Peplin. Scott has developed his common-sense style of growing orchids over the last 25 years and has studied the environment of South Florida as it relates to Orchids. October 10, 2022It’s ORCHID BINGO!!! Come and join us for a fun evening of playing Orchid Bingo to win Orchids and Orchid related supplies. We’ll also have a raffle giving you another chance to win. Details will be provided in our October newsletter. 

September 12, 2022 – Come join us for our program on “Mounting Orchids: Why and How” presentation and demonstration by Olivier Turina, who is an awarded grower by the American Orchid Society. Olivier’s passion for orchids began when he attended the 2013 Fort Lauderdale Orchid Show and he’s been hooked ever since.
